Introduction: search is becoming an entity-first system

Traditional search engine optimisation treated text as the primary signal — keywords, content relevance, backlink anchor text. Modern search and AI systems increasingly treat the world as a graph of entities — people, organisations, places, concepts — and their relationships.

Google's Knowledge Graph, introduced in 2012, was the first major public manifestation of this shift. Today, the Knowledge Graph powers Knowledge Panels, entity-based query understanding, and a significant share of AI Overview content. The same entity-first logic underpins how LLMs learn about the world: through text about entities and their relationships, not through keyword patterns alone.

Entity SEO is the practice of building accurate, consistent, machine-readable identity signals that allow search engines and AI systems to correctly identify, represent, and connect your brand within their entity graphs.


What is the Google Knowledge Graph?

The Google Knowledge Graph is a structured database of facts about entities and their relationships. It contains information about hundreds of billions of entities — organisations, people, products, places, and concepts — and the relationships between them.

When you search for a well-known brand, you often see a Knowledge Panel on the right side of the SERP: the brand name, logo, description, founding information, key people, and related entities. This panel is populated from the Knowledge Graph.

More importantly for modern SEO and GEO, Knowledge Graph entity recognition powers:

  • AI Overviews: Google uses Knowledge Graph entity signals when assembling AI Overview responses
  • Structured snippet data: knowledge about an entity informs rich results for associated content
  • Query understanding: recognising that "AiRAT" is an organisation, not a generic term, affects how the query is processed

Why entity clarity matters for AI visibility

When an LLM generates a response about your brand, it draws on learned associations. If those associations are weak (because your entity representation is sparse in training data), inaccurate (because descriptions of your brand vary significantly across sources), or confused (because your brand name is similar to other entities), the LLM will represent you poorly — or not at all.

The three entity clarity failure modes:

1. Sparse representation

Your brand is mentioned infrequently in the sources that make up LLM training data. The model has weak associations and defaults to not citing you when alternatives are better-represented.

Cause: limited external press coverage, no Wikipedia presence, minimal GitHub or academic citations.

Solution: authority building programme targeting publications and databases with strong training data coverage.

2. Inconsistent representation

Your brand is described differently across owned properties, external mentions, and schema markup. The model's associations are noisy and may produce inaccurate descriptions.

Common examples: company name formatted differently across the website and LinkedIn; category descriptions that change each time ("AI company" vs "enterprise platform vendor" vs "data and search firm"); founding date inconsistent between website and Crunchbase.

Solution: canonical entity definition implemented consistently across all owned and submitted properties.

3. Confused entity

Your brand name is similar to another entity (a product, person, place, or concept) and the model conflates the two or applies attributes from one to the other.

Solution: disambiguation signals — explicit sameAs links to Wikidata and Wikipedia where your brand is clearly defined; consistent brand name formatting that differentiates from potential confusion entities.


The entity clarity checklist

On your website

Organisation schema (Schema.org) Implement a complete Organization JSON-LD block on your homepage and key pages:

  • name: canonical brand name (exactly as you want it represented)
  • description: 2–3 sentence entity definition covering category, geography, and key services
  • url: canonical homepage URL
  • logo: ImageObject with URL
  • foundingDate: ISO format
  • sameAs: array of URLs including Wikidata, Wikipedia, LinkedIn, Crunchbase, GitHub, and other authoritative directories
  • areaServed: geographic markets served
  • knowsAbout: topics and domains of expertise

WebSite schema Implement WebSite schema with a SearchAction potentialAction — this tells Google your site has a search function and reinforces entity-site associations.

Consistent brand naming Audit every instance of your brand name across your website. Choose one canonical form and apply it consistently. If you use abbreviations or acronyms, define them explicitly on first use.

On external properties

Wikidata Wikidata is a free, structured knowledge base that feeds into Wikipedia's infoboxes, Google's Knowledge Graph, and LLM training data. If your organisation meets notability criteria (typically: existing press coverage, independent significance), create or claim a Wikidata entry with complete property values.

Key Wikidata properties for organisations:

Wikipedia Wikipedia presence is the highest-value entity signal for LLM training data, but it requires meeting notability guidelines. For organisations, this typically requires multiple independent coverage in secondary sources.

If a Wikipedia article is not currently achievable, focus on: being cited in relevant Wikipedia articles in your domain, ensuring that any existing Wikipedia mentions of your brand are accurate, and building the press coverage that will eventually support a Wikipedia article.

Google Knowledge Panel If your brand has a Knowledge Panel, claim it through Google Search Console. Claiming allows you to suggest corrections and additions to the panel information. If your brand doesn't have a panel yet, the path to earning one is: complete Organisation schema, Wikidata presence, consistent brand signals, and external press coverage.

Industry databases and directories Crunchbase, G2, Capterra (if applicable), LinkedIn Company Page, GitHub Organisation (for technical companies), and industry-specific directories are all sources that feed into Knowledge Graph and LLM training data. Ensure your profile information is complete, consistent with your canonical entity definition, and regularly maintained.


Entity relationships: connecting your brand to the right graph

Entity SEO is not only about your brand as an isolated entity — it is about the relationships your brand has within the entity graph. Google's Knowledge Graph connects entities through typed relationships, and AI systems learn from these connections.

Key entity relationships to build:

Founder/key person relationships Person entities connected to your Organization via founder, member, or employee relationships reinforce brand-person associations. This requires person-level entity clarity for your key executives.

Domain expertise relationships knowsAbout in Organisation schema connects your brand to topic entities. If you are cited in Wikipedia articles about specific topics, you are connected to those topics in the entity graph.

Geographic associations areaServed and location properties connect your brand to geographic entities, which affect geographic-specific query routing.

Service/product relationships makesOffer linking to Service or Product entities explicitly associates your brand with the services you provide — making it more likely to appear in queries about those specific services.


Building external entity authority

The on-site and directory work establishes a foundation. The entity associations that matter most for LLM training data visibility are built through external citation.

Priority external citation targets:

Industry analyst coverage Gartner, Forrester, IDC, and similar analyst firms are high-authority sources with strong representation in training data. Being mentioned in analyst reports — even in the context of a market overview — creates durable entity associations.

Trade publication coverage Industry-specific publications (TechCrunch, SearchEngineLand, SC Magazine for cybersecurity, etc.) are well-represented in training data. PR efforts that result in named mentions — not just link placements — build entity associations.

Academic and research citations If your work, methodology, or findings are cited in academic papers or conference proceedings, these citations create strong entity signals in training data with high-quality bias.

Open source and technical community presence For technical organisations, GitHub repository citations, Stack Overflow answers, and technical blog citations (Hacker News, dev.to) contribute to training data entity associations. A well-maintained GitHub organisation with cited repositories is a significant entity signal for technical queries.


Monitoring entity accuracy in AI systems

Once entity clarity work is implemented, monitor how your brand appears in AI-generated responses:

Monthly query sampling Sample 20–30 queries across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and Bing Copilot that should include your brand. For each mention, assess: Is the brand name correct? Is the category description accurate? Are the services described correctly? Are there factual errors?

Knowledge Panel monitoring Monitor your Google Knowledge Panel monthly for accuracy. External sources that feed incorrect information into the Knowledge Graph can affect Knowledge Panel content. Flag and dispute inaccuracies through the Knowledge Panel management interface.
